If I am to make an assumption, I’m guessing you, like me, are probably under the cosh somewhat at the moment – trying to balance the demands of work, with the social side of the run up to Christmas, and do all of the shopping/planning for Christmas and New Year too. If that is the case, then I can understand why you might feel that exploring job opportunities is something you’d rather not throw into the mix right now. That said, a determined job seeker can certainly still find a new role in December – in fact, there are some very good reasons as to why now’s an ideal time to explore opportunities.
There’s less competition
Approximately 20% of people have a new year’s resolution around changing jobs and as a result, in January, the job market is tougher and more competitive than ever. In contrast, right now, fewer people tend to be interested in looking for a new opportunity (for the reasons above).
So whether it is a case of applying and interviewing for a role before Christmas, or just putting feelers out to ensure that you’re at the top of the pile come January, getting the ball rolling now could reduce competition and boost the odds of your application standing out.
You’ll demonstrate your commitment to your job hunt
Like those January gym goers that disappear come February, a good proportion of the people who resolve to find a job in the New Year, attend interview and, in some cases, accept a role, only to not follow through because they’ve started their job search for the wrong reasons.
Whilst prospective employers don’t view every January applicant with suspicion, they recognise that those in the market leading up to Christmas are genuinely committed to moving and are likely to take their applications more seriously.
Recruiters will have more time to work with you
Because there are fewer active job seekers, for recruiters, the last few weeks of December can be one of the quietest times of the year. This means we’ve got more time on our hands to tailor your CV, go out of our way to apply careful pressure on hiring managers, and generally make the whole process as simple as possible for you.
You’ll maintain your job search momentum
If you suspend your hunt over the Christmas period, you might struggle to motivate yourself again to start looking in January. By keeping up the search, you’ll remain focused and enthusiastic and, most importantly, your positive attitude and drive won’t go unnoticed by recruiters.
Everyone’s in the Christmas spirit!
People are generally more positive around this time of year, so it’s an excellent time to approach recruiters. Interestingly, because employers are in better spirits, a higher percentage of people who interview in December get offered jobs than those who do so in the first quarter of a year, following the festive break.
