Globally, this elite US law firm has seen a 48% increase in revenue since 2012, and 2016 has been another good year for the firm. This law firm has a clear international growth plan and has opened a series of new offices. The London office is well established and is full service. There have been a number of high profile partner hires and the London office has a lot of positive momentum behind it in terms of brand and US management support. Key US partners are regularly in London/Europe and there are resident US partners permanently based in the London office. This structure and overall cross selling culture has meant that over 30% of the work undertaken in the London office is referral work from other offices. The platform is well suited for new partner laterals as the compensation system does not take into origination credit but on what partners have done for others. The management is vigorous about this and this strategy has proved to be very successful both in terms of culture and revenues. This ingredient has been key to the success of the London office and the process of internationalisation of the firm. Over 40% of the total number of lawyers are contentious lawyers and there is a significant litigation team in London. Over $500 million worth of the firm’s revenue comes from the contentious side of the practice.
Commercial Arbitration and current team:
The UK litigation team is well established (the firm in London is full service) and is at the heart of the London office. The partners are mainly focused on complex international disputes and some of the partners also have commercial arbitration expertise but are not known as specialists in the area. The client base is quite diverse (both geographically and across a number of sectors) and well suits to arbitration disputes. There have been some significant hires in the US and the firm is looking to build the practice in London. The firm has made a recent hire in investor state arbitration in London and has hired a very known team in the US. The firm would like to continue the growth with the hire of a well-regarded commercial arbitration partner.
The firm would ideally like to recruit a dedicated commercial arbitration specialist. Reputation is more important than following, but you will need to demonstrate a track record of business generation and winning mandates. You need to show you have the confidence to grow and lead the practice. But this is very much a strategic role and as such the partners understand that in this practice area a portable following (in the traditional sense) is very difficult to secure, so the emphasis has been on background, personal credibility in the market, arbitration contacts in the investor state world and the ability to package this altogether on the platform and build a business for the long term.
