Our brief comes from the hiring manager, Partner for the Real Estate unit within the firm, with a focus on Planning. She is looking for someone to work closely with her on bigger projects but with 2 bright associates beneath them. One example profile of candidate she thinks the role would suit is someone looking to step away from the big firm churn to being a bigger fish in a smaller pond. She feels the firm offer a friendlier, less intense environment, where hours aren’t as long, and partners don’t dump and run.

The Firm has a full service offering with 12 broad legal disciplines and focusing on 10 industry sectors. The Firm has 167 partners and over 500 lawyers in total. The Firm has an unusually broad range of skills and experience across the full spectrum of business and personal needs and their clients vary from national and international organisations of all sizes, public sector bodies and also private clients.

The Role

The Firm have a fantastic opportunity for an associate (4-7 PQE) to join their ambitious planning team. The role will suit someone experienced in acting for developers, investors and landowners and who is looking to develop their career within a friendly collegiate team. An important part of the role would be supporting the partners in business development. The team acts for a broad range of clients including on mixed use schemes in London, major strategic land projects around the country, residential development, commercial investments and hydrocarbon planning.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Providing ad hoc commercial advice on aspects of planning, highways, compulsory purchase and environmental law
  • Leading on the negotiation of s106 agreements
  • Advising on planning application strategy and reviewing planning applications and environmental impact assessments
  • Managing planning appeals, judicial review and other court challenges
  • Working with real estate colleagues on acquisition / sale documentation
  • Contributing to marketing and business development activities to develop the department’s client base and network of referrers and contacts
  • Contributing to divisional knowledge and know-how initiatives

Technical Knowledge:

  • Broad experience in planning, compulsory purchase and highways law for landowners, developers and investors
  • Some environmental law experience would be beneficial but not essential

Personal Specification:

  • Be confident to work autonomously (seeking supervision where appropriate) and as an integrated part of both a planning and wider real estate team
  • Demonstrate excellent time management skills
  • Be organised and capable of running a significant number of files and matters
  • Have the ability to develop effective working relations at all level.
  • Be confident in verbal and written communication with a range of clients
  • Have a flexible approach and willing to go the extra mile
